Skincare & confidence when battling cancer

Skincare & confidence when battling cancer

One in two people will develop some form of cancer in their life-time and, whether directly or indirectly, it will have an effect on all of us. The example closest to home is our founder Claudia. She lost her father to cancer just over 4 years ago and, as he battled the disease, he found that his skin became dry and irritable. Many cancer sufferers find similar symptoms arising from their treatment.

While a person is dealing with the physical and emotional fallout of cancer, discomfort and self-consciousness relating to skin isn’t an extra distraction that anyone would want.

Many people undergoing cancer treatment experience dry, rough, fragile, blotchy and red facial skin. Moisturising is one side of the issue (this is something we discuss in our sister company Salcura’s blog for World Cancer Day) but applying cover-up products can be even more challenging, precisely because of the dryness, texture and sensitivity of the skin. We regularly get asked if and how Rosalique can be used to help those who are going through cancer treatment feel better in their own skin, so we wanted to take this opportunity to answer some of the most frequent questions.

My skin has become very sensitive, can I still use Rosalique?

At Rosalique, our products are formulated with sensitive skin in mind, which is a frequent symptom not just of cancer itself, but of chemo and radiotherapy also. The radiation involved in these treatments can, in terms of skincare, cause discomfort and even pain to the patient. It can leave one with incredibly sensitive skin, often manifesting in extreme redness, blotchiness and discolouration. This is a double-edged sword, as it can leave a person with a feeling of self-consciousness, while also making the application and wearing of make-up really uncomfortable. Rosalique was extensively tested and deemed ‘very suitable’ for sensitive skin, however we always recommend doing a patch test when starting a new product – especially if your skin is super sensitive.

Will Rosalique be moisturising enough for my dry skin?

Whilst some of our customers find Rosalique moisturising enough on its own, we recommend applying a good but light moisturiser before your Rosalique, especially for those who suffer from extremely dry skin. Choose a product that avoids any commonly known skin irritants, as well as petroleum-based products, as they tend to not be easily absorbed into the skin.

How does Rosalique work?

Rosalique contains green microcapsules that burst open when applied, releasing colour changing pigments. The green outer layer of the capsules instantly mask redness in the skin, whilst the pigments even out the skin tone with a glowy, natural finish.

Apart from instantly masking redness and evening out the skin tone, Rosalique has also been proven to relieve irritation and reduce redness over time. We rely on natural ingredients for Rosalique’s skin calming properties, such as shea butter and Alpha-Bisabolol, extracted from the chamomile plant. This holistic approach to make-up fits well with the needs of those fighting cancer, as it avoids many of the harsh chemicals that can induce flare-ups in skin, making the actual skin look and feel worse while simply covering it up.

Cancer affects hundreds of thousands of people each year and the last thing you want on your mind, while potentially fighting for your life, is the worry of reddened skin making you feel self-conscious as you do so. Our hearts go out to those who are affected by cancer, whether in the present or in the past, directly or indirectly.
