Top tips for makeup and skincare when working out

In our mission of promoting holistic skin health and confidence, we are always encouraging people to work on their overall health - and that includes moving their bodies. Whether you like gentle walks or high-intensity training, movement is great for your body, your mind and eventually your skin! But unfortunately, in the short-term or if not managed correctly, your skin can go through experience excessive flushing, sunburn or breakouts. That's why we've compiled our top skincare tips for before, during and after your workout - so you can focus on your health journey, skin-struggle-free!

Before exercise

Of course, we don’t actually think the way you look matters whilst you’re exercising – what’s important is that you’re getting yourself moving, nourishing your body and mind, and doing something that is incredibly important for your overall wellbeing. We would, therefore, recommend not wearing make-up when exercising – let all the sweat out and let your skin breathe as much as possible. However, if facial redness makes you feel uncomfortable, less enthusiastic about or more reluctant to exercise, it’s best to opt for a tinted moisturiser. Make sure you use a product that is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and light on the skin.

If you exercise outside

While we, in principle, recommend not wearing anything when exercising, if you exercise outside, an SPF is essential. Studies show that wearing SPF 50 daily can reduce the risk of cancers and skin damage. Remember that Rosalique contains a 5* rated SPF50 to give you optimum protection!

During exercise

We know it’s so, so tempting, but try not to touch your face! It’s really easy to do, without even knowing it, but you are basically transporting bacteria to your face via your hands (and, in the gym, with people breathing heavily and covering everything in their sweat, there are more bacteria than ever). It’s good to try not to touch in everyday life but this is especially true in the gym, as you may be touching the floor and (possibly dirty) gym equipment. This is absolutely key in preventing blemishes.

Immediately after exercise

Always wash your face as soon as possible after finishing a workout, to remove sweat, bacteria and dead skin cells. Even a quick splash and a scrub in the bathroom will do. Before you wash off, make sure to wash your hands, for reasons mentioned before. Use a gentle cleanser for your face but make sure you remove absolutely every bit of makeup and/or dirt from when you were working out.

Proceed with a moisturising product – ideally, one with calming properties. Look out for ingredients such as chamomile, green tea and aloe vera. If you’re going on with your day after your gym session, make sure to apply your SPF and any make-up if desired. Remember, Rosalique has a-Bisobolol, so it will not only give you a beautiful light coverage, but it will also calm your red skin.

Persistent redness?

If you are very prone to blushing and flushing and find it takes forever for redness to go down after exercise, you can drink something very cold or suck on some ice to help. Sucking on ice might sounds funny, but it really works! Staying hydrated is, of course, key anyway for good skin, but having something really cold so close to the affected area, right there on your face, can take the edge off of the most intense redness & burning sensation.

Despite how you may feel, you’re always ready for another session on the treadmill or on the squat rack. Don’t give up! Also, with these tips in your back pocket, skin redness and irritation can be one less thing on your mind. Keep at it and you’ll see results, with your body, as well as your skin!
